Dice Poker

Dice used to play the playing card game Poker are an old twist on the classic game.

The dice game of Poker is a popular version of the standard card game. There are specially made sets of five dice marked with picture representations of playing card faces: Ace, Kink, Queen, Jack, 10, and 9. It is thought they were first invented in the latter half of the 19th century. If you don't have a set of poker dice then you can easily substitute standard spotted dice by playing 1, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 corresponding to A, K, Q, J, 10, 9. The standard spotted dice version of the  game is known as Indian Dice.

No particular suits are assigned to the King, Queen and Jack while the 10 is usually a diamond or sometimes a heart and the 9 may be either a spade or club.  The Ace is usually a spade but very occasionally a club.  Poker dice come in sets of five.

There are many different variations to the rules, but nearly all revolve around making poker hands. See below for rankings:

Poker hands ranked high to low:

1 Five-of-a-Kind     Aces ranking highest; 9s lowest.
2 Four-of-a-Kind    Aces ranking highest; 9s lowest.
3 Full House          Three-of-a-kind and a pair.  A, A, A, 9, 9 beats K, K, K, 10, 10.
4 Straight              Five consecutive values.   A, K, Q, J, 10 beats K, Q, J, 10, 9.
5 Three-of-a-Kind  Aces ranking highest; 9s lowest.
6 Two Pairs           A, A, 10, 10, 9 beats K, K, Q, Q, 10
7 One Pair            Aces ranking highest; 9s lowest.
8 Highest Die Ranking according to highest backers.    A, K, J, 10, 9. beats A, Q, J, 10, 9.

Another variation to standard Poker dice are Spanish Poker dice. These sets of five dice are marked A,K,Q,J 8,,7.

Of course gambling with Poker dice plays a great part in the fun and excitement of playing the game. Remember when playing for stakes to set a limit on how much you are prepared to lose and stick to it. Don't fall into the trap of chasing your losses.
