Dice Poker? 3 Exciting Variants of the Classic Card Game

Poker is a card game loved and played by millions, so it’s no wonder a few different variants have spawned over the years. Although mostly a few are played, there are many more worth knowing about. People used to classic forms of poker can try out a few interesting variants to switch things up and maybe find a new favorite.

Five Card Draw

Five Card Draw used to be a widely played version of poker but has now been mostly ousted by Texas Hold’Em and Seven Card Stud. Still, the version remains quite popular in some places, including in the Nordic countries. This variant is also known as Cantredraw and is one of the simplest variants. You can play this variant with 2-6 players. To start off a game, each player is dealt five cards, one by one, face down. The deck is then placed aside, and each player picks up their respective cards. Each player should hide their cards from the other players.

After that, the first round of betting begins and the player to the dealer’s left starts. Players can Call, Raise, Fold, or Check. If, after the first round, more than one player remains, it’s time for the “draw” phase to start.

Each player then specifies the number of cards they wish to replace and are dealt new replacement cards. All remaining players now have five cards again, with a new betting round ensuing. After that, there’s a poker showdown and finally, if more than one player remains, the one with the best hand takes home the prize pot.

Pineapple Poker

Pineapple Poker is played almost exactly like Texas Hold ’em, with just one twist. In Pineapple Poker you get to decide which 2 cards you keep out of the 3 hole cards you’ve been dealt. You get a set amount of time to discard 1 before the betting game begins.

Once each player has discarded one card, the gameplay continues just like the traditional version of poker. While this small change might not seem like a lot, it does change the flow of the game.

While some games are very different, others are just barely changed.
